About

IMG_20160402_200736I am an art historian and writer based in New York where I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University. Currently, I am working on a book manuscript, tentatively titled Vicente Escobar and José Antonio Aponte: Redefining Art, Race, and History in Colonial Cuba, that examines the work of the free black artists Vicente Escobar and José Antonio Aponte in relationship to the contemporaneous cultural politics of artistic production. My main research interests include black visual artists of the 17th-19th centuries in the Atlantic world, the visual economy of the Haitian Revolution, the relationship between artistic and social identity, late colonialism and cultural politics in Cuba, and the architectural history of Havana.

On this site, I post notes on works in progress, thoughts on learning more about the digital humanities, and other research tidbits in the Notebook section.
